Episode #89 – The Final Grape
After an amazing run that spanned more than half a decade, Gary Vaynerchuk today announces his retirement from producing regular wine video content. Thank you to all the Wine Library TV and Daily Grape fans that have made this chapter of Gary's life so gratifying.

I haven't visited this site in months, but alas this morning I missed getting a daily wine info fix. I've read books, listened to seminars, taken classes, and drank many glasses of wine. Despite all that I am still left thirsty. I'm sure this question has been asked many times on this thread but I'll ask for what I am sure is the umpteenth time. Anyone know where else I can go for a good wine show? Hope everyone is well, and Gary I'm sure you are. If anyone found a decent replacement reply here and let me know.

I started playing around with a new wine app on my Droid called Cor.kz that seems pretty cool, but not perfect. I've scanned a few wines from my little "cellar" and it recognized them from the bar code. Anyone else using this or similar apps with success?
-
Sam Davies
I started using it two weeks ago and haven't looked back. Sure it could use some fixes like most apps but overall I think it is a great app. I love that it also does spirits and beer.

Happy Monday everybody! So, I contacted a few dozen wineries to find participants for a Pinot Noir "battle" that would feature wines from California that had a suggested retail price of $50 and under. Four wineries sent in samples for the show and as luck should have it, each of the four wines just happened to be from a different appellation in California! I would love to hear from any Pinot lovers out there, what areas do your favorite Pinots come from. Cheers, Scott

Enjoyed the video, Scott! Of course I have to comment on my favorite grape. To answer your question: Sonoma Coast! The following areas tie for 2nd place: Anderson Valley (Mendocino County), Russian River and Santa Rita Hills. Thanks for posting this. Cheers!

Calistoga and Russian River, but my experience with Cal pinot's are limited.

Anders - I think you meant to say Carneros and RR.. Well a lot of people would agree with you.

@Lisa Yup. I don't know why always mix those name. Maybe it's because Carneros sounds like meat :)

@Lisa S - I had a really nice Migration (Duckhorn's Pinot label) from Anderson Valley that was only $35. Glad you enjoyed the video!

I, too, am a peenot guy and will definitely check out the video, I belong to the Oregon Pinot Noir Club so I have an affection for that style of wine.
Cheers!

@Anders: You're too funny!
@Scott: Anderson Valley is closer in style to Oregon, me thinks. Migration is good -declassified grapes that don't quite make it into the Goldeneye ( the high-end bottling from Duckhorn). Try Black Kite sometime, really good pinots. BTW: So glad that Ampelos was in your lineup. Very good wines and good people, too. :)
@Dom: Agree - Oregon is great! :)2 days ago

Gotta love Shane Hudson for his alert reminder and question some of the hustle from Gary.

Gary said that palates (including his own) were changing. And as you know, wines are also changing in the course of time (let alone bottle variation). So put down your stones...

I really don't think anyone was throwing stones. Perhaps it would have been wise to state that he had revisited this wine right up front. Just saying.

@lurker and Robert,
Gary has now stated he retasted and it stunned him, but I think i will question that anyway. How come the wine did not reveal even a slight potential the first time? When you are selling to consumers and marketing for selling a specific product one should be careful not to confuse customers to much. How many did not buy the wine due to the first critique, and how many are now buying it from Winelibrary?
This in fact the problem with marketing or one could say, the strength of marketing. Nothing but the latest news on the latset hipp place counts and that is so far from the TYE you can get. There is no history of anything anymore. A brand can be killed for one bad move now regardless of impeccable history up until last second and a bad brand can be heralded now inspite the fact it sucked hard all days before. The smarter marketing ”scam” gets the customer, since we humans seem to have no inclination to remember or even take the effort to recollect.

Hey Robert, we're still waiting for the first episode of your "Robert in the Electric Saddle" show. :D The first wine on the show could be a lovely 10-buck wine from Portugal. ;-)

I wondered if peeps would be here. Nice to see you are. I was wondering if anyone would "fight" for the 5,000th comment. It's deserved by someone other than me.
Dom, it's all you buddy. I hope you're well!
Yours,
B.S.

I am very well my friend. I am quaffing a magnificent Viognier while prepping a Dover sole dish with Rappahannock River oysters in a cremant cream sauce while waiting to watch the Oscars.
I won't fight for the V (put bar on the top) but if it happens to come my way, like Bar Rafaeli, I would take it but I think you are deserved of this honor.
Cheers B.S. Glad to see you are doing well.

You're a good man Dom. I've thought of you often through this Peyton stuff. If it shakes down this way are you okay with him walking and taking Luck?
Miss that interaction with you friend.

More importantly, will you become a Jets fan if they get Peyton??
-
Dominus
Thank you for the thoughts @B.S. I've been dying a slow death for the past year not knowing if he will even be able to play another down. If he retires, the only positive would be I was in Indy to see his last game.
IF he comes back (to answer @ZachNYC question) yes, I will root for whichever team he plays for . . . even the Jets. ;) Patriots or Steelers? Hmmm, I doubt it but its safe to say its impossible he would sign with either one. We should find out soon if he has a "noodle arm" or the likes of the Dolphins, Jets, Skins or some surprise team like the Texans sign him to a performance-incentive contract.
If anyone can come back, he will do it.
Good talking to you my friend. Pull up a chair and let's talk some vino or what's ever on your mind.
Cheers!

Great Gary, I buy the iBook, and the hard copy, I get to page 59, go to the winelibrary, chase you over here and now you say you are quitting? Surely you must have seen my You Tube Channel and are desperately trying to track me down to be my new Biz Dev guru, that makes sense.... : ) I am going back to finish the book so I will know what to expect when we meet in person.

Nope. Not good enough. Where the hell is Gary? Did he fall off the face of the earth? Would it kill him to do a video once a month? I thought we would get some love in some reasonable timeframe after his abrubpt departure.

Welcome to the occupy DG movement. A place where folks come to show their solidarity and stand up against the 1% anti-vayniacs (Gary).
Kind of ironic, but feel free to throw together a video and post it here.

My wine find of the week for less than 10 bones. It's no Dominus but it's great for quaffing on a Wednesday night before the premiere of "Survivor" and some baby back ribs. :)

Robert
Thanks for the suggestion Dominus, I have seen that one at my local supermarket but haven't tried it yet.
On a side note...I grew up just a few miles from Liqourama. This is the place where I started my wine quest so long ago

My find of the week is Campos de Luz. A garnacha based wine from Cariñena. made by Bodegas Esteban Martin. 2010 is as good as ever before and the wine is 7 bones, I'll guess even less at your place, we do have a 2 dollar alcohol tax here :)

I'm going with a "Bargain Bordeaux" for my pick this week. At only 10 clams it's a great weeknight food wine and it rivals a lot of red Bordeaux wines that I've had in the $20-$25 range.

Wowwww, an '09 Bordeaux for less than 10 bones! I will be ordering some of this juice.
Thanks for sharing.

Wine auction sites......who do you use, if any?
I used to buy from Wine Bid. However, it seems that they start the "auction" at or near retail pricing, thus removing the idea of a real auction. I've been looking into Wine Commune. Has anyone had any luck here?
-
Dominus
Hi Zach: I am registered on both sites and I really like Wine Bid but agree, recently the prices are not that inviting. I'm writing it off as over time, it has become more popular and there are more people bidding who are willing to spend more money on good wines.
I have been with Wine Commune longer but use it sparingly. I don't like the setup of the site and just looks kind of amateurish to me so I stay away.
Personally, I stick with WineBid though buy only some off-the-wall wine that is not on everyone's radar which is hard to do.
Just my 2 cents

Thanks D. I agree with your assessment of Wine Commune. I think that's what my hesitation was about jumping in on some auctions.
As for WineBid, I have a hard time being involved in an auction when the opening bid is darn close to retail. I guess I was hoping that there would be something else similar to what WineBid USED to be. I got some great deals on great bottles from them and didn't mind paying the buyers premium. But now, with the starting bids where they are, plus the premium, I may as well go to my local money pit and buy it there.
