Episode #89 The Final Grape

After an amazing run that spanned more than half a decade, Gary Vaynerchuk today announces his retirement from producing regular wine video content. Thank you to all the Wine Library TV and Daily Grape fans that have made this chapter of Gary's life so gratifying.

Nope. Not good enough. Where the hell is Gary? Did he fall off the face of the earth? Would it kill him to do a video once a month? I thought we would get some love in some reasonable timeframe after his abrubpt departure.

Welcome to the occupy DG movement. A place where folks come to show their solidarity and stand up against the 1% anti-vayniacs (Gary).

Kind of ironic, but feel free to throw together a video and post it here.

My wine find of the week for less than 10 bones. It's no Dominus but it's great for quaffing on a Wednesday night before the premiere of "Survivor" and some baby back ribs. :)

Thanks for the suggestion Dominus, I have seen that one at my local supermarket but haven't tried it yet.

On a side note...I grew up just a few miles from Liqourama. This is the place where I started my wine quest so long ago

My find of the week is Campos de Luz. A garnacha based wine from Cariñena. made by Bodegas Esteban Martin. 2010 is as good as ever before and the wine is 7 bones, I'll guess even less at your place, we do have a 2 dollar alcohol tax here :)

I'm going with a "Bargain Bordeaux" for my pick this week. At only 10 clams it's a great weeknight food wine and it rivals a lot of red Bordeaux wines that I've had in the $20-$25 range.

Wine auction sites......who do you use, if any?

I used to buy from Wine Bid. However, it seems that they start the "auction" at or near retail pricing, thus removing the idea of a real auction. I've been looking into Wine Commune. Has anyone had any luck here?

      Dominus

Hi Zach: I am registered on both sites and I really like Wine Bid but agree, recently the prices are not that inviting. I'm writing it off as over time, it has become more popular and there are more people bidding who are willing to spend more money on good wines.

I have been with Wine Commune longer but use it sparingly. I don't like the setup of the site and just looks kind of amateurish to me so I stay away.

Personally, I stick with WineBid though buy only some off-the-wall wine that is not on everyone's radar which is hard to do.

      Just my 2 cents

Thanks D. I agree with your assessment of Wine Commune. I think that's what my hesitation was about jumping in on some auctions.

As for WineBid, I have a hard time being involved in an auction when the opening bid is darn close to retail. I guess I was hoping that there would be something else similar to what WineBid USED to be. I got some great deals on great bottles from them and didn't mind paying the buyers premium. But now, with the starting bids where they are, plus the premium, I may as well go to my local money pit and buy it there.

AndersN, what's your view on salty chocolate and chilli chocolate? these are my two current loves...
Do you have any other strange mixes to recommend?

    • AndersN

      AndersN

@Entente It all depends on how much stuff that are put into the bar, I've had good sea salt chocolates and bad ones. The right amount of additives is the one that for me not owerpowers the chocolate. That if you gonna eat chocolate with a flavour. But if ones after chili with a hint of chocolate thats different. Chili is har but can really spice up a chocolate. I've had som really bad mixtures. Blueberry intese from Lindt, yuck.. and I love blueberry.
I would try almond or pecan for subtle notes, Lingonberry for tartness (Anton Berg) and why not black currant (New tree)

      Good job Scott!

I know some of the things to look for when pairing wines with regular meals. Whats the basic rule when pairing wine with chocolate....sweeter wine with chocolate or a more subtle or tanic wine for chocolate?

    • AndersN

      AndersN

@ZachNYC, well that is a general chefs rule yes. But I have hold about chocolatetastings for ca 1000 ppeps the last 7 yeras and it seems to be two camps. One that , yes like it when the wine is seeter then the chocolate, but the other group is after the dark tannic chocolate and the tannic feel of the wine. To lure people to try new thing is the best. Give a person a halftrocken Reisling to a 60% chocolate makes them wondering how could this match, white wine don mix, but they do for many and give sweet wine afficinado a dry red tannic monster to a 85% cacao nibble and they wonder if this actually is so good as they just tasted. Trust your own palate, ergo, try, try, try. :)

Before I even look at the youtube video I would say an Alsatian Riesling. Pairing who knows what parts of a pig with German/French influences and I think that work.

      Now let's go see.

@Robert: You need to jump into the fray and shoot Episode 1003! C'mon my friend!! :)

    • Dominus

      Dominus

Well, I was incorrect, to a point, since our host was a buffoon! A flat and oxidized wine from Languedoc! The video was hilarious but I find it truly amazing how two guys could screw up an evening with a lovely French lady. Oh that's right, they're Brits! :)

I remember my first wine book was one written by Oz Clarke.

I could see myself sitting out in the vineyard with that gorgeous sunset and Lisa S pouring a glass of Sea Smoke while I'm grilling a nice pork tenderloin with some Herbs de Provence and pomegranate marinade. Yum ;)

      Thanks for sharing AndersN.

P.S. I liked the early camera angles of the wine.
